Dakar
Dakar, capital of the Republic of Senegal, is a vibrant city of broad, tree-lined avenues, colorful open-air markets, inviting cafes and just a splash of French elan. Striking contemporary architecture is set off by historical colonial buildings, while a myriad of galleries, boutiques and street vendors offer everything from fine paintings, sculptures and crafts to colorful clothing and imported goods. Golf, tennis, fishing and water sports are available at a number of fine resorts and on some of the many superb beaches. Thanks to its usually excellent weather and proximity, Senegal is the most popular nation in West Africa with visitors from Europe seeking sunny beaches and relaxation.
Shopping
The Kermel, Sandaga and Soumbedioune Martkets are located in the city center. Leather articles, wood carvings, gold and silver jewelry, batiks and fabrics may be of interest. In some stores, low-key bargaining may get you a better price on big-ticket items. Store hours are generally from 8:30a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Food
Senegal is known for its fish exported from Europe. Seafood is the specialty. Try some of the "Tieboudiene" a typical Senegalese meal made of tomatoes, rice, fried fish and vegetables. You may also try the Poulet Yassa (chicken with rice) smothered with a sauce of onions and peanut oil. Local drinks are Bissap and Ginger which quench the thirst.
Currency
The local currency is the CFA francs, but the US dollar is generally accepted.
