Djibouti, the former French Somaliland, is a small country sandwiched between Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia, with a port at the southern entrance to the Red Sea.

Among the most popular items are handmade baskets, curios and crafts, which can be found in shops around the Place Menelik. Vendors will accept US dollars in small denominations.

Food

If you plan lunch ashore, your best bet is at one of the hotel restaurants. Cuisine ranges from French and Italian to Chinese and Vietnamese.
