Lerwick

Besides its dramatic Shetland Islands scenery, Lerwick is close to Jarlshof, an important archaeological site, Scalloway Castle and the island of Foula, the haunt of countless seabirds.

Activities

• Fort Charlotte - This impressive structure dates back to 1665 and was designed as a Cromwellian stronghold to protect the Sound of Bressay from invasion during the Anglo-Dutch War. The fort was finally completed in 1781.


• The Town Hall - Don’t miss the Clock Tower’s colorful stained-glass windows which depict scenes from early Viking history.

Shopping

A most popular buy is the handmade Shetland sweaters. Sheepskin jackets, as well as gold and silver jewelry with Celtic and Norse design are also good buys. The major shopping area is along Commercial Street.

Food

Fresh fish, hearty fish broths and lamb stew are island favorites. Hotel restaurants offer fine dining options.

The local currency is the British Pound.
